I. Required Uniform: The Avatar
The Avatar serves as your uniform. A good one that fits you can be hard to find. Many of our members have had several Avatars before finding the right one for them. Our member Avatars contain the Red Dragon Standard of the St George Squadron. If you are committed to joining our ranks one day you will have one watching your back as well. There is one rule regarding Avatars. No one is allowed to use the likeness of Lord Horatio Nelson. This is our way of honouring him as our 'Founding Father'. Note that the standard Avatar size is Width: 100 & Height: 128. Here is a link with information on the Avatar from our esteemed Captain Mackenzie:
II. The Biography
The biography serves as the window from which we see your character's path to the SGS. It boast of your brave deeds and your great heartaches. You can have as much depth as you want to and keep it open and add to it as you play within the world of Pirates of the Burning Sea. Below is a link to Captain Hawke’s timeline BIO:
III. The signature block
The SGS members use standard signature blocks on our forums as well as other forums. For the applicant we would prefer if you use this one as a base example:
Captain Henry G. Sharpe
HMS Buzzard
"Before this time to-morrow I shall have gained a peerage, or Westminster Abbey."
-Lord Horatio Nelson.
IV. Assigned Vessel
To have the wind in your face as you stand on the quarterdeck… Captain! A God of your own wooden world. Below is a link to a thread where you can see the names of some of our members & guests favorite ships started by our own Captain Marshall. As well as a link to a number of historic RN ships at Wikipedia, provided by Captain Diamond:
V. The Personal Ensign
The Squadron prides itself on its member flags. Below is a link to the PotBS site where you can find guides to help develop your own. We're sure that if you ask perhaps one of our members would be glad to offer you assistance. Or simply PM any member of our Flag Review Board. Please use the SGS Flag Guide put together by Captain Banks:
VI. Board Activity
We highly encourage you to maintain board activity and communicate with everyone. This is one of the ways we get to know our future members. It is a great way to get to know each other, especially as we await the release of PotBS. Regardless, we will always use the boards to communicate information with our members even after the game is out. Again, we encourage you to remain active and contribute.
VII. Posting to Topics
You are encouraged to post to any topic that you find interesting. That doesn’t mean you have to be a ‘troll’ and reply to each and every thread. Just post as you feel like it.
VIII. Starting Topics
You are always free to start a topic. We promise not to bite your head off unless you post something very political, involving extreme religion or overtly sexual (pornographic in nature). That’s not to say these subjects are completely off limits but use good judgment and always be considerate of others.
IX. PotBS
We definitely want you to post information regarding the game. Updates or news articles are always welcome and can be posted in the Broadside thread or as a stand alone topic for discussion on the Squadron's PotBS section. Below is a link to the PotBS News board:
X. Role-Play
This is a role-play guild. We firmly believe that role-playing the part of a Captain of the RN adds not only to the professionalism of our Squadron's membership but also enhances the gaming experince as we make our way through the world of PotBS. Our role-play forums are not as active as they once were but you are always free to write stories for your character and by all means wander about the Crown & Anchor Inn located at the link below:
XI. The Squadron Code of Conduct
Most importantly always strive to adhere to our Squadron’s Code of Conduct. There’s no quicker way to get the lash or worse, stricken from our rolls, then from being a violator of this document.
XII. Voice Communications
The ability to use voice communications is a must for the SGS in game. We highly encourage all our applicants to familarize themselves with the use of Ventrillo/Teamspeak programs. Both are used by the Squadron. It also is another form to show activity within the Squadron & will get you noticed by our members and enhance your application approval.
We hope that the above information we provided will help you as you endeavour to gain entry into our Squadron. Let it serve as your checklist as you start your application process.
In closing we will leave you with these two quotes:
"The Royal Navy of England hath ever been its greatest defence and ornament; it is its ancient and natural strength; the floating bulwark of the island."
-Sir William Blackstone
"England expects that every man will do his duty."
-Lord Horatio Nelson
